3 Generations of Experience, Knowledge, and Customer Service Excellence
Established In 1958
Our company was established in 1958 by my grandfather Chas. (Charles) Gentmantel Sr.. A woodcarver by profession,
Chas. Gentmantel immigrated to Montreal, Canada from Germany in 1929. His woodworking background enabled him to
find work on the construction of the prestigious Sun Life Building in Montreal's financial district, which was
completed in 1931.
A Business that Evolved to Suit the Times
When my grandfather founded the Gentmantel store in 1958, he specialized in woodworking machinery from Germany.
With the end of WWII in 1945, many German-trained woodworkers were immigrating to Canada and eager to put their
woodworking skills to use. This created a growing demand for professional woodworking handtools. Adapting to
this growing market, my grandfather expanded his business and started selling quality handtools from Germany.
With his 2 sons Charles Gentmantel Jr. and Kurt Gentmantel Sr. working by his side, my grandfather continued to
work at the store until the age of 92 years old; a remarkable career of over 70 years.
